A little birdie told us that the Charles Schwab Challenge (CSC) tees off at Colonial Country Club (3735 Country Club Cir.) today for the 77th anniversary of the PGA tournament. From Monday, May 22-Sunday, May 28, nearly 100 golfers will drive, chip, and putt their way to a cut of the $8.7 million total purse + a restored 1973 Bronco. We hope this year is on par.

History

The CSC is the longest-running PGA event that is still held at its original site. World Golf Hall of Famer and hometown hero Ben Hogan won the inaugural tournament in 1946 and went on to win four more times.

Starting in 1952, champions and committee chairmen donned official Scottish royal tartan plaid jackets as an homage to the origins of the sport, and another Hall of Famer + North Texas local legend Byron Nelson teed off the first shot, a tradition that continued for 13 years.

Golf clap for these players — each year, previous tournament winners select two young players who weren’t eligible to compete as the “Champions Choice.” 2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth, yet another local golfer, was a Champions’ Choice invitee in 2014, before taking home the title in 2016.

Know before you go

  • The first two days are for Pro-Am players and invited guests only, but the course is open to the public starting on Wed., May 24.
  • Daily tickets are available in three tiers: Colonial (general admission), Villages (all-inclusive), and Patio Club (clubhouse access) + ranging from $55-$635.
  • Gates open at 6:30 a.m. every day.
  • Parking is also priced in tiers: Rockwood Lane (parking lot w/ shuttle), Silver (garage w/ shuttle), and Gold Valet + can be purchased online.

Things to remember

  • Bags are permitted but must be smaller than 6 inches x 6 inches. Check the full list of prohibited items.
  • Mobile phones must be silenced + calls should be taken in designated zones. See the course map.
  • Break out those polos and pastel shorts — wear light, loose clothing, and sunscreen.
